More than a mere update, Wii Sports Resort was a giant leap forward from the original Wii Sports. Before embarking on Wii Sports Resort, the team honed their skills on diverse projects, from Wii Fit to Mario Kart Wii, gaining invaluable experience in crafting innovative gameplay. For instance, Kenta Sato, programmer for Swordplay and Table Tennis, previously contributed to Wii Fit’s running software.
The Wii MotionPlus addressed limitations of the Wii Remote’s accelerometer. Previously, accurately detecting rotational movements and slow motions posed a challenge. The Wii MotionPlus provided superior responsiveness and precision, allowing for subtle and complex actions within Wii Sports Resort. Takuhiro Dohta, the boxing programmer, expressed astonishment at the Wii MotionPlus’s rapid response capabilities.
A key feature of the Wii MotionPlus was “sudome,” or instantaneous stopping. Unlike the previous accelerometer, which relied on complete stillness for position detection, the Wii MotionPlus tracked position even during movement or deceleration. This enabled abrupt stops with pinpoint accuracy, enhancing realism, especially in games like Swordplay. Takayuki Shimamura, director of the Wii Sports project, noted that the Wii MotionPlus solved a problem Miyamoto-san had raised: “Simply applying force when swinging isn’t fun!”
Developing the Wii MotionPlus presented numerous challenges, but the result was a revolutionary accessory that transformed how players interacted with Wii Sports Resort. Yoshikazu Yamashita, programmer for Baseball and Boxing, was immediately enthusiastic about the Wii MotionPlus concept.
The development team was amazed by the Wii MotionPlus’s responsiveness, particularly its “sudome” capability. A demo controlling an on-screen puppet by rotating the Wii Remote showcased the potential for realistic and precise gameplay.
The Wii MotionPlus’s accuracy and sensitivity opened doors to new games and innovative playstyles. Precise motion detection enabled the creation of skill-based games requiring technique and finesse, elevating the gaming experience.
