  • Explore Pine Mountain State Resort Park Nature Preserve

Pine Mountain State Resort Park Nature Preserve, established September 26, 1983, encompasses two tracts totaling approximately 980 acres in Bell County, Kentucky. Located within Pine Mountain State Resort Park, the preserve boasts an old-growth forest with hemlock, tulip poplar, and white oak trees, many of which are 200 to 300 years old. The preserve is also a significant archaeological site featuring a large sandstone rock shelter known as Rock Hotel, once inhabited by prehistoric Native Americans. Pine Mountain State Resort Park sits atop the Pine Mountain Thrust Fault, one of the most prominent geological structures in the eastern United States.

The preserve features ancient trees, rugged mountain terrain, breathtaking views, and rare plant and animal species. Visitors can enjoy challenging hikes on three miles of rugged, terrain-hugging trails. Ample parking is available within the resort park. However, visitors should be mindful of potential hazards such as cliffs and (rare) venomous snakes. Activities at Pine Mountain State Resort Park include hiking, nature study, bird watching, geological study, and more.

Nature Preserves within Kentucky State Parks are special places with distinct management priorities. While parks primarily serve public recreation, the area set aside as a Nature Preserve focuses on protection of rare, threatened, or endangered species and communities. The Kentucky Nature Preserves Commission (KNP) focuses on managing these species and communities, while allowing for scientific research and non-consumptive recreational activities.

In 2017, the Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund (KHLCF) provided funding for the acquisition of the park’s signature attraction – Chained Rock, a massive boulder tethered to the cliff face by a giant chain, drawing countless tourists for viewing and photography. Pine Mountain State Resort Park is truly an ideal destination for nature lovers seeking to explore the pristine beauty of Kentucky.

To reach Pine Mountain State Resort Park from Pineville, travel south on US 25E for 1.5 miles, turn right onto KY 190 for 1.5 miles, then turn right onto Road 1491 for another 1.5 miles to the Pine Mountain State Resort Park Lodge parking lot. The preserve is located within the park, providing visitors with easy access to the resort’s amenities and services.
